10 Best Bhagavad Gita Stories in English

The Bhagavad Gita is not only a Holy book for Hindus, but it is also a book of wisdom. The Bhagavad Gita is the divine conversation between Lord Shree Krishna and Arjun. The confusion created in Arjun’s mind during the war of the Mahabharata led to the origin of the Bhagavad Gita. When the two armies, the Kauravas and the Pandavas were standing face to face, Arjun asked his charioteer Lord Krishna to take his chariot in the middle of the two armies. Seeing his own people on the battlefield of Kurushehtra, Arjun refused to fight the war. Lord Krishna as a mentor guided Arjun about his duty and suggested that he walk on the righteous path through giving various examples and stories.

1. Arjun’s confusion on the battlefield of Kurukshetra

Arjun is known for his bravery but when he saw his up cousins, granduncles, and teachers standing against him, ready to fight the war, Arjun became too emotional. He lost his courage to fight the battle. He asked Lord Shree Krishna how he could fight with his own loved ones? At that time Lord Shree Krishna guided Arjun by reminding him about his duties as a warrior. Lord Shree Krishna told Arjun that his duty was to walk on the path of righteousness and he must do his duty.

Moral- In life we should always do our duty even if it might look tough to do.

2. Work teaches us to be responsible

Arjun was not willing to fight the war. His mind was filled with confusion and doubts. Arjun thought of giving up his duty to fight. Lord Shree Krishna mentored him and explained to him that everyone on this earth has a duty to perform. When we do our duty we become more responsible. If we don't do our duties then we cannot take care of ourselves either. Doing our duty helps us to keep balance in the world.

Moral- we must do our duties and duties make us sincere and responsible.

3. The Sun always shines

Lord Krishna explained to Arjun that the sun always does its duty of shining without expecting any reward. In the same way, we need to do our duties without expecting any reward from others. We can only control the things which is in our hands. Like a gardener can give his best in planting the trees but he cannot control the sun, rain or wind.

Moral- we should do our duties without thinking about its reward.

4. A work of a Farmer

Lord Shree Krishna told Arjun to look at a farmer. A farmer works hard to grow crops. Sometimes rain helps the farmer, sometimes it does not. But the farmer does his job with full love and dedication without thinking of the external things which is not under his control.

Moral- Do your duty without thinking of the result. The results are not always under one’s control.

5. The Senses as the wild horses and the Mind is the charioteer

Lord Shree Krishna said, Our senses are like wild horses. They are turbulent and can distract us from our goal. Imagine a chariot without any charioteer, the horses will take the chariot in any direction but if the charioteer is there then they can control the horses of the chariots. Our mind is our charioteer which can control our senses.

Moral- control your senses and be focused on your goal

6. Example of Ocean and River

Arjun asked Lord Shree Krishna, When we know what we want then why do people feel restless? Lord Shree Krishna showed him the example of the ocean. The ocean remains calm no matter how many rivers submerge into it.

Moral- There are endless desires in this world but we need to stay calm and unaffected by the desires

7. To be Steady Minded

Lord Shree Krishna had given the example of a yogi to stay steady-minded minded just like a lamp in a windless room. The lamp remains steady and glows brightly. In the same way, we need to be steady-minded. If a kid is studying but his mind is not steady and he is thinking about toys or games then he cannot be focused.

Moral- keep your mind steady

8. King Janak’s Legacy

In the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Lord Shree Krishna told Arjun the story of King Janak. King Janak was the king of Mithila and the father of Princess Sita. He was a great leader and set examples as a good king for others to follow. We should do our work in such a way that we become a good example for others to follow. Others should be inspired by our work just like King Janak inspired others.

Moral- Give your best in your work and set right examples for others to follow.

9. Arjuna sees Lord Shree Krishna’s universal form

When Arjun still had doubts and confusion then, Lord Shree Krishna, showed him his universal form. The universal form of Lord Shree Krishna was divine and glowing more than several suns. The Lord had many arms and faces. Seeing the true form of Lord Shree Krishna, Arjuna realised that Lord Shree Krishna was not just his friend and mentor but he was the supreme Lord of this universe.

Moral- God always protect his devotees and guides them.

10. The True Secret of Happiness

Lord Shree Krishna told Arjun that true happiness comes when a person remains calm in success and failure, does his duty and remembers god with love and devotion in everything he does, and is a truly happy person. This made Arjun realise his duty and he got ready to fight the war.

Moral- True happiness comes when we do our duty and keep balance in life.
