Homonyms are those words that have the same spelling or pronunciation but they have different meanings or functions. Homonyms is an important topic to be taught to the kids as it might clarify their doubts when they see the same words used in different contexts.
Homonyms are of two types:
Homophones - these are the words that have the same sound but they have different meanings and spellings. Example- see and sea.
Homographs - these are the words that have the same spellings but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciation. Example - lead (metal) and lead (to guide).
There are few words that are spelled the same and sound the same, those words are considered both homophones and homographs in rare cases. Example - bat (the animal) and bat (sports equipment),
