The reforms suggested in NEP National Education Policy 2020 highlight equitable access to the highest quality education for all, regardless of their social & economic backgrounds. A well-rounded, practical, fulfilling Education helps bridge the learning gaps, and NEP reforms in the education system cater to the needs of ECC (Early Childhood Care) to higher Education.
NEP 2020 is the 1st education policy that aims to address the 21st Century educational demand, including SDG 4(Sustainable Development Goal).
SDG 4 Quality Education emphasises providing free, equitable, quality primary & secondary education to all girls & boys by 2030. The NEP has influenced the Indian education system through a holistic approach along with technology integration.
NEP envisions making India a global superpower by revamping the education system that is deeply rooted in Indian ethos, is sustainable and transforms India through high-quality Education. After replacing the previous education system for 10+2, NEP 2020 highlights an innovative approach to the 5+3+3+4 education system. It is a more structured design to provide holistic development, a flexible and progressive learning experience for the children without any background bias. Skills development, digital literacy and inclusive Education that align the students with the demand for 21st-century skills are the focus areas of the new policy.
The key features of NEP 2020 highlight the structural framework for Education (5+3+3+4).
The stage includes 5 years of foundational Education for a child. It includes three years of preschool/ Anganwadi education followed by primary Education in Classes 1 & 2. Foundational stage education covers the 3 to 8 years of age of a child, and learning takes place through activities. It caters to the emotional and social development of a child.
This stage covers the classes from 3rd to 5th standard laying step for future academic pursuits. In this stage, the child is introduced to a variety of subjects like Maths, Science etc, along with enhanced speaking, writing, and reading skills.
It covers classes from 6th to 8th, wherein the child is in the middle of his educational journey and understands more abstract concepts related to diverse subjects. The child differentiates between subjects of his choice by developing deeper understanding & critical thinking skills.
This stage is divided into two parts and covers 4 years of Education from 9th to 12th standard. The students explore a variety of sub, etc., and pursue them further as per their interests & aptitudes.
If we look at the history of the Indian education system, it was largely focused on access & equity. The emphasis was always on summative assessments in the form of final exams.
The NEP was first introduced in 1968 and focused on
NEP 1986
NEP 1992 was introduced with reforms
The above reforms & introduced proposals were highly focused on rote memorization & repetition. It was not a comprehensive evaluation system as it couldn't assess critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among children. It also gave rise to the high-stakes exam culture, which left students more anxious & stressed.
NEP 2020 vision has laid out a proper restructuring of the Indian education system from pre-primary to higher education. NEP reforms focus on academic achievements along with critical thinking, problem-solving skills and connecting the acquired knowledge to real world situations. The assessment reforms helped reduce exam pressure and create a classroom environment that promotes creativity and innovation.
In the traditional educational system, focus remained on learning the facts or gaining knowledge, but the execution of facts/knowledge in real-world problems was missing. The conventional learning system promoted rote memorization, but NEP 2020 suggests engaging the children in understanding and applying the knowledge in real-world settings.
NEP 2020 has incorporated assessments that foster critical thinking & problem-solving skills to make decisions addressing challenging issues and analyse the knowledge. Traditional assessments have created havoc on the mental health of children as the focus was to pass the single most important final exam. The continuous assessment mechanism proposed by NEP 2020 helps in understanding the periodic learning growth & progress of each child.
Comprehensive skills development like digital literacy, teamwork, communication skills, etc, are equally important along with academic proficiency. Hence, NEP 2020 provided a more balanced approach to assessing children with academic & general abilities.
To effectively use & understand the new assessment methods, there is a requirement for trained educators. Educational institutions & organisations must invest funds in proper training & acquiring resources to implement the learning objectives.
Implementing NEP 2020 suggests sizeable investment in technology. In conducting digital exams and various tests, internet connectivity is a major challenge. Conducting assessments as per NEP reforms becomes challenging without the availability of resources, can eventually result in differences between learning experiences and outcomes.
Every Indian state has its own education boards along with testing procedures. The assessment & methodologies reforms proposed by NEP should seamlessly transition into the present system. The reforms should be clearly stated otherwise it can create confusion among teachers, parents & students.
Accepting standardized testing, practical & project-based assessments by all the stakeholders is necessary. In India, as per social & cultural standards, final grades/result have more acceptance.
