Octagon Shape | Definition, Formula, Examples

Shapes are the different diagrams formed by lines, curved points and segments. Kids are taught about shapes from kindergarten and it goes on further till higher studies in the form of geometry. There are different kinds of shapes like square, triangle, rectangle, circle, pentagon, octagon etc. Let’s know more about octagon today.

What is an octagon?

An octagon is a polygon with eight slides and eight angles. The word octagon is derived from the word ‘Octo’ which means eight. An octagon can be either regular having all eight sides and angles equal or it can be irregular with unequal sides and angles.

There are four types of octagons

1. Regular octagon - an octagon where all eight sides and angles are equal. Ex- the red stop sign.

2. Irregular octagon - an octagon where all sides and angles vary with different measures. Ex- the holes in a basket

3. Convex octagon- an octagon with all the interior angles are less than 180 degrees. ex- a regular octagon.

4. Concave octagon- an octagon where at least one interior angle is more than 180 degrees.

Formulas

Area of a Regular Octagon:  A = 2(1+2√) a2 where a is the length of one side.

Perimeter of a Regular Octagon: P=8a, where a is the length of one side.

Sum of Interior Angles: The sum of the interior angles for any octagon (regular or irregular) is 1080 degrees.

Area of an Irregular Octagon: Break the shape into smaller triangles, calculate the area of each, and sum them up.

Some common examples of octagons

Practice problems

1. If the side on a regular octagon is 15 cm, find its perimeter.

2. If the perimeter of a regular octagon is 100 cm, find its side.

3. Find the perimeter of an irregular octagon whose side lengths are 8 cm, 12 cm, 10 cm, 12 cm, 16 cm, 4 cm, 18 cm, and 12 cm.
