Mastering verb forms in particular will seem frustrating most of the times and many English students feel the above when learning English grammar as a whole. In the context of English sentences, verbs are key elements and these, like any other part of speech in the language, have their own forms depending on the tense and aspect. These forms are particularly useful for people who want to enhance their communication skills. In this guide, we shall dissect verb forms V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5 in a very simple manner.
Verb forms are the various ways in which the action of the verb can be said depending on the time frame or the grammatical makeup of the action. There are five principal forms of verbs that are either called V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, and these include:
V1 – the base form
V2 – the simple past
V3 – the past participle
V4 – the present participle or gerund
V5 – present simple with -s for third person singular.
The forms are important in enabling the formation of sentences that are logical and convey the desired message. Let us examine each form in detail.
The V1 form of the verb is the base form and this form of the verb is called the base form. It is form of verb that is shown in a dictionary. V1 is employed in the simple present tense (with exceptions for third person singular) and to create infinitives (e.g., “to eat,” “to go.”).
Examples:
Go: I go to school every day
Eat: They eat their breakfast at eight o’clock.
Play: We play soccer during the weekends.
Use Cases:
Used in the present simple tense for the first and second persons the pronouns I, you, we and they.
Imperative sentences: Open the door.
To-infinitives: I like to read.
The V2 form of a verb is expressed in a simple past tense. This verb form is used to define actions which are finished as they took place in the past.
Examples:
Go → Went- She went to the park yesterday.
Eat → Ate – He ate the whole pizza.
Play → Played – They played a match last night.
Use Cases:
Simple past tense: Limits the action to a scope of time in the past and refers to the time of occurrence of the action. E.g. “I went to the museum last week.”
Note: Many verbs in this situation have an irregular form in the past hence they are not predictable. For example, run does not turn into runned but ran instead.
V3 form is also known as the past participle. It is used in perfect tenses and in passive forms. For example, some verbs are regular meaning they V3 is made by inclusion of –ed {for example played, or worked). Contrary wise some are irregular and need to be kept in mind {for example eaten or gone}
Examples:
Go → Gone – They have gone home.
Eat → Eaten - I have Eaten dinnner.
Play → Played : We have played three games so far.
Use Cases:
Present perfect tense: “She has done her homework.”
Past perfect tense: “They had gone already when I came.”
Passive voice: “Children ate up the cake.”
V4: Present Participle/Gerund The V4 form is the present participle or gerund. It belongs to the family of the cries of violence or its various considerations of addition inscriptions by including the suffix ‘- ing’ to the base form of a verb. It is for continuous tenses and as a Gerund in any sentences of which verbs are conquere.
Examples:
Go → Going: She is going to the market. Eat → Eating: We are eating dinner. Play → Playing: He enjoys playing guitar. Use Cases: Continuous tenses: “They are watching a movie” (present continuous), “He was driving fast” (past continuous).
Gerunds: These are verbs that act like a noun. For example: “Swimming is my favorite sports.”
Present Simple (with -s for Third Person Singular) The V5 form is the present simple form for the third person singular (he, she or it). It usually modifies the base form by attaching ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ to it.
Examples: Go → Goes: She goes for work every day. Eat → Eats: He eats his lunch at twelve o'clock. Play → Plays: It plays an important part in the balance of nature. Use Cases: Present simple tense for the third person singular. For Ex. “He takes his car to work every day.” Timeless and habitual states: “The east is where the sun comes up.”
Regular and Irregular Verbs Explained
When it comes to verb forms, one has to understand that there are two kinds of verbs.
Regular Verbs:
They are a set of verbs that adhere to the same rule of adding ‘-ed’ to the root word to create simple past and past participle forms. For example:
V1: play → V2: played → V3: played
V1: talk → V2: talked → V3: talked
Irregular Verbs:
These are verbs that do not adhere to a set rule and are mostly learned. For instance:
V1: go → V2: went → V3: gone
V1: drink → V2: drank → V3: drunk
Practice and Repetition: The easiest way is to pronounce the forms of the irregular verbs or write them down repeatedly in order to fix them in long-term memory.
Flashcards: Prepare flashcards writing the base form on one side and on the opposite side V2/V3 forms.
Group by Pattern: Some irregular verbs have the same patterns as others (e.g. ‘sing-sang-sung’, ‘ring-rang-rung’).
