The love story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is one of the most legendary, intriguing and revered stories of Hinduism. It stitches together the themes of Devotion, Love, Sacrifice, Patience and transformation.
Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva self-immolated and destroyed herself as a protest towards her father, Daksha’s disrespect towards Shiva. The grief-stricken Shiva withdrew from the world and retreated deep into meditation in the Himalayas and disconnected from the world. This went on to cause imbalance in the world. The Gods needed Shiva to re- engage with the world and restore balance.
The Gods descended to seek the Help of Goddess Parvati, the daughter of mountain King Himavan and his queen Mena.Parvati was born with the soul purpose of reuniting with Shiva.
Parvati was drawn to Shiva from a young age, not by his power, but by his spiritual depth and mysterious aura. She found herself determined to win his heart. Shiva remained indifferent despite the affection she showed him. Shiva was unwavering in his meditation and remained focused on his meditation completely detached and immersed in Ascetism.
Parvati was determined to prove her Devotion to Shiva. She renounced her royal life, lived in the forest and took up a Tapasya(austerity) enduring harsh conditions and meditating for several years to prove her commitment.
Lord Shiva took notice and was impressed by her devotion and determination toward him. He emerged from his meditation, appearing in several disguises to dissuade her. Her steadfast and unbreakable devotion moved Shiva, who then accepts her as his bride. Their union symbolises the balance between renunciation and worldly desires.
Shiva accepts Parvati as his consort. Their divine marriage was the grandest of cosmic events. Their marriage symbolises the union of Purusha (Consciousness) and Prakriti (Nature). Their bond represents the perfect balance of ascetic and domestic life.
True love elevates us: The love of Parvati transformed Shiva from an ascetic to a loving husband and father. This shows that true love has the power to transform even the most reclusive person.
Balance of energies: Shiva has the energy of stillness and energy. Parvati embodies Shakti or the life force. The union of these two energies shows that a balance between action and stillness is required for true balance and growth.
Equality: Shiva treats Parvati with respect and seeks her counsel often on many things narrated in the puranas. This shows how much he valued, respected and revered her opinions and thoughts.
Personal growth: In the relationship of Shiva and Parvati, Parvati evolves in her spiritual practice to attain shiva and Shiva opens himself to the world again because of Parvati’s love. This shows us that healthy relationships push both individuals to be the best versions of themselves- spiritually and emotionally.
Oneness in duality (Ardhanarishvara) - This form of Shiva and Parvati shows us that one must retain individuality in a relationship. In a truly strong relationship, the energies come together but never lose their identity.
The relationship and love story of Shiva and Parvati has something to teach everyone at every stage of life.
