Grandparents have an important and often underappreciated role in raising of children. Their wisdom, experience, and unconditional love can have a major impact on a child's growth. In today's times, where both parents mostly, grandparents can provide stability, direction, and a strong feeling of family heritage.
Here are some reasons on why forming bonds with grandparents is necessary.
Strengthening the Bond with Family: The glue that keeps extended families together is the grandparents. Elders are frequently the focus of family get-togethers and festivities, which emphasizes the value of strong family ties and produces enduring memories.
Emotional Assistance: Grandparents provide a safe and supportive environment in which children can freely express their emotions and ideas. Grandparents act as confidants and listeners for youngsters who need someone to talk to. This emotional relationship allows youngsters to acquire a strong sense of security and self-worth. It also adds to their personality and behaviour when they grow up, such as having concern for the older generation.
Share Wisdom and Life Lessons: Grandparents have a lot of stories from their life experience to share with their grandchildren. Stories from their youth are often a topic of curiosity and awe for the little ones. These anecdotes help children make better judgments and handle problems better. It also makes them aware of the past and the struggles their elders endured!
Grandparents help children feel secure, loved, and nurtured. They encourage confidence, listen non-judgmentally, and be open-minded about their ideas. Grandparents make great caregivers, sometimes even taking on a full-time role of a guardian. They contribute to the child's sense of security and love when parents are unavailable either due to work or other commitments for their kids
Nowadays, there is a decline in familial bonds. This is mostly because kids nowadays are busy with school, homework and extra curriculars, which leaves only the summer vacations for them to go and enjoy with their grandads and grandmoms. This paucity of time with them impacts our relationship with them. But, here are some activities that parents can do to enhance and improve relationships with grandparents:
1. Visit them more often: Whether it is winter or summer break in school, or Diwali or Holi Holidays visit them more times every year if they are away!
2. Leverage technology: Teach grandparents how to use the smartphones and devices and stay in touch virtually over zoom or WhatsApp video calls. Show them that now they can watch their favourite old tv shows and movies anytime anywhere on the tap of a finger.
3. Go out with them: Whenever you visit them, tell them to show you around their place. You will be surprised to see how many stories they will tell you about their own young life and your parents childhood as well
4. Play some old games: Games like Chaupad, Ludo and Cards can be played with them and help them refresh their childhood memories. This will also help kids understand a lot about the Indian Games.
7. Recitation of fairy tales: Get them to recite kids fairy tales and stories of Akbar and Birbal and even Tenali Rama will do. Kids nowadays don't hear stories anymore. It is always either music or YouTube or podcasts. Stories can be a great method to learn communication skills, improve imagination and even sleep better. Kids should read with them, read to them and let them read to you.
8. Learn what excites your grandparents: Is it going to places of worship? Or is it chanting holy verses? It could even be something like them loving to go on early morning or post- dinner walks. Accompany them wherever they go and stay around!
With grandparents’ involvement, there will be more endearing memories created, resulting in stronger familial bonds. Let us express our gratitude to our grandparents by giving them a sincere note, going on a special trip, or just spending time together. Grandparents provide us wisdom, love, and memories; let us cherish and treasure them.
