“A day spent with you is my favourite day. So today is my new favourite day.” Says Winnie the Pooh.
Truly, time is something which no amount of money can buy. Time with your child or children is invaluable and no one or nothing can replace it. Childhood is the foundation period for a child which determines what type of adult they will become. Children who spend quality time with their parents have a bond and strong emotional connect with them have shown to have good social interactions, a sense of worth, they are happy, show sings of being secure and many more multiple benefits.
Here is a list of 10 ways of spending quality time with your child creating lasting memories for you and your child for life:
1. Asking about their day:
As soon as your child is back from school, asking them how their day was is by far the best way to engage with children. Asking questions like what activities they did, was there anything new, were all her or his interactions okay, how did the lunch break go? Remember when we show keen interest and pay attention to them it automatically creates a comfortable environment to share anything with you. Whether you’re working or busy with household duties, giving 5-10 minutes this way will lead a long way for you and your child.
2. Keep a ritual:
We lead such busy lives that it is difficult to remember it all. Making a ritual with your kid be it daily, few days a week or weekly whatever suits you the best. Some ideas or ways you can use for rituals are like having at least one meal together, getting ready together, giving him or her a bath, brushing together, letting them be a part of planning your day.
3. Cooking together:
Cooking works wonders for your child. It helps in activating the senses, being aware in the moment, knowing basics of where the food they eat comes from, respect for the ones who cook for them. Children are picky eaters and when we as parents engage them in cooking activities, they tend to drop being choosy. Baking a cake or cookies or asking them to help in clean up, letting them mix a curry or decorating a dish there are plenty of ways to engage them in the kitchen. This also strengthens your bond with the child.
4. Gardening:
Gardening is by far the best way to spend quality time with your child at home. Making children plant trees, water the plants, plucking flowers or just playing in mud – these activities are a powerhouse for their sensory development and to be grounded. In today’s screen dominated world, such activities are truly a breath of fresh air! Planting, repotting and composting helps you impart on one prime value to the child- such as caring for the planet and all living beings in general.
5. Outdoor activities:
Outdoor activities like camping, adventure sports, playing games etc are a great way of spending time with your child too. These also have an added benefit in developing sportsmanship spirit, understanding uncertainties of life, developing team spirit, letting the adventure bug bite them early on, developing social skills, improving physical stamina and fitness and gain confidence.
6. Learning a skill together:
Learning a skill like painting, drawing, yoga, dance, singing, any exercises, playing a musical instrument and learning a new language are some ideas to learn it together with your child. These help the child to develop strong interpersonal skills, develop a good skillset, activating their creativity which all lead to a stronger friendship with your little one.
7. Letting them take over and choose:
We as parents are sometimes so careful and scared that if we let loose, something wrong may happen. But, sometimes letting your child take over and choosing what they want to do with you will give them unparalleled joy. This gives them a sense of freedom and helps them to build a strong bond with you. Whenever its possible ask them what they want to do with the free time and do that! You never know how pleasant a surprise it could be!
8. Let your child accompany you:
Taking your child along with you for grocery shopping, filling petrol / diesel, accompany you to work if possible, to a bank etc. This helps them understand the world they are living in. Children are very fast and good observers and graspers. Giving them this kind of exposure to the real world early on helps them to know the world better.
9. Travelling:
Travelling with your child for small or big trips depending upon your time and feasibility. Travelling helps the child to learn about various cultures, people, history of the place and learning through experience. They learn to adapt quickly to any situation. Travelling increases their patience and tolerance power, create a opportunity of self-discovery from a young age. Travelling is amazing for a child in all ages.
Aside from these tips for spending quality time, it’s all about how you make it work or happen. From less than 10 minutes a day to how much ever you can spare, making sure to give that time to the child is all that matters to him or her. Remember we as parents and educators are the role models for our children. They learn by what they see and not by what we tell them. Your children get only one childhood. It depends on you how memorable you make it for them!
