“Why Bhagavad Gita for Kids? The ideal given to children in their early childhood alone can, again and again, inspire them in their future years of life and supply them with the courage to face their problems, the guts to pursue their purposes diligently, faith in themselves and their country, and the heroism to live and act according to their convictions.” – Swami Chinmayananda
The Bhagavad Gita also known as the Gita is a timeless spiritual text which is all in one teaching life principles and showing us practical ways as to how we can walk through all of life’s happenings. The Gita is a conversation between Lord Krishna and Pandav Prince Arjun in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. When Arjun was confused, Krishna imparted in him valuable snippets of wisdom, giving clarification for all his doubts and dilemmas and showing him the path towards righteousness and self-realisation. The learnings and teachings of the Gita transcend religious boundaries and shower universal principles that are relevant to all ages, types as they are practical life management lessons.
Introducing our young ones to the Bhagavad Gita when their mind is like a sponge absorbing and learning from everything around them, they cultivate a strong moral compass, become resilient, develop a deep sense of empathy and compassion towards others and become responsible citizens of the society.
Below are some of the many real life lessons children learn from the Bhagavad Gita:
The confusion which Arjun went through in the battlefield teaches children how to face challenges with determination and perseverance. Knowing Arjuns internal conflict they learn to face challenges head on ask for help when needed.
Krishnas role as Arjuns mentor shows us the importance of mentorship and having a guide who will help us navigate when the road gets rough. This teaches and encourages children to seek help and open up in front of those adults whom they trust and feel safe with. They will understand its okay to ask instead of suffering with uncertainties.
By being introduced to powerful tools like faith and surrender children tend to develop a sense of humility, never give up attitude and gain inner peace. When a child knows there is a higher power who is protecting them like an angel and they develop a sense of trust in that power which is greater than them, by auto they tend to develop a strong moral compass.
Children learn how to be the best judge, be thoughtful and have clarity in their minds. When children learn how to weigh all options with awareness, they make responsible decisions with a balanced mind and take ownership for the same.
The Gita emphasises how ephemeral worldly things are. By learning detachment from these early on they learn to live simple with what they need, have gratitude and experience life’s simple joys.
Children learn the world is family and transcend religion, caste or creed. They learn inclusivity and become responsible global citizens.
Nishkarma Karma encourages children to focus on the journey, give their heart and soul into each and every work they do, do it happily without grumbling. This helps them in pursuing their goals with tenacity.
In today’s fast paced world there is so much going on due to which children struggle to be in the moment. The Gita emphasises the quality of being mindful in every task they do which gives them a sense of happiness and peace. This also contributes in destressing themselves, how to enjoy the beauty in everything and enhance their focus.
This promotes kindness, understanding and in maintaining harmonious relationships. They learn to think how the other person is feeling, have a broader sense of what is happening with which they develop interconnectedness and mutual respect.
In today’s world where there is so much of comparison, we tend to overlook our blessings. The Gita teaches us to count our blessings, be with gratitude for everything we have and have a humble attitude for all successes and accomplishments.
Svadhyaya means to look within and introspect what we did and how we did it. When children are taught early on the power of self-analysis they introspect and learn from their experiences. This helps them to develop a sense of awareness and be in continuous learning.
The Gita gives a lot of importance to nature, being connected with it and respecting it for all it showers on us. The Gita puts a spotlight on the interconnectedness of all living beings. This instils in them how to be responsible, reduce their carbon footprint, follow sustainable practices whatever they can do and become good citizens of our planet.
In our culture the Guru Shishya Parampara has its roots from ages. Children are taught to respect their elders and learning from them. They are taught the importance of guidance, how to be humble and learn and be reverent towards elders.
Learning from the Pandavas and Lord Krishna how to be honest and maintain our integrity no matter how the world is. This cultivates trustworthiness, moral courage and develops a strong sense of ethical responsibility. With this children learn to align their actions and goals with the values instilled in them building a strong character.
The Gita emphasises on selfless service and the beauty of inculcating it in our life. Small gestures of service to animals, poor people or nature helps to instil the power of seva in a child. This instils empathy, compassion and a sense of purpose becoming socially responsible citizens.
Introducing teachings of the Bhagavad Gita at a young age empowers children with wisdom and values which will act as a guide throughout their life. As responsible parents and educators let us pass on these invaluable lessons and principles to our next generation making them compassionate, empowered and morally upright.
