Every parent dream of seeing their child reading fluently and accurately. How do they initiate this reading journey in a child? Does the child memorize or just say the words? What are the correct words do we teach? These are a few of the worries they go through, but teaching children to read, the journey generally begins in kindergarten.
The "sight words" or sight vocabulary help children to read by sight (Look – See, See- Say) before they learn phonemes, blends, or phonic sounds. Sight words are common and easy words that kids understand easily.
According to D.J. Kear and M.A. Galdart's study of High–frequency words in printed materials prove that "75% of words used in children's printed materials comprise sight words." Sight words are categorised according to each grade level.
Here is a list of 250+ Sight words for First Graders that children can learn efficiently.

Dr. William Edward Dolch, an educator, studied numerous children's books during his time and created a list of 220 service words, of which 95 words are common nouns. As per his study, these words frequently appear in children’s books. The children should know and say the words immediately when they see them. They don't have to sound them. Between 1930 and 1940, he created an essential word list for pre-kindergarten to 3rd grade to enhance reading fluency in young learners. Dr Dolch also published a book in 1948, "Problems in Reading".

Sight words help build reading proficiency not only for young children but are also resourceful for foreign language learners or for those learning English as a second language ESL. It's important to focus on a few sight words at the beginning. Revising and repeating the sight words further instil confidence among young learners.
Pick a word and write it down on a whiteboard or paper. Keep making a variety of sentences using that word the entire day.
Encourage your child to collect sight word cuttings from newspapers, magazines, etc and paste them into the newly created sight book.
Create a sight word board with columns and rows. With the help of dice, play a roll, read, and move the pawns with the kids. Children can move their pawns according to the dice roll.
Create bingo cards with sight words. Call the sight words, and children can check and cut them on their bingo cards.
Read a story aloud and tell children to raise their hands when they hear particular sight words.
