Akshaya Tritiya on 30th April of 2025 is one of the most pious dates of Hindu calendar, symbolizing ever-increasing prosperity, wealth, and divine benevolences of almighty. Akshaya is "never decreasing" or "eternal," and Tritiya is the third day of bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the moon's Vaishakha month. Individuals on this holy day revel throughout India with a lot of fervor and vigor, especially the masses that pursue material wealth, spiritual development, and new endeavors.
What really is revered, however, on Akshaya Tritiya, and what is the origin around the rituals on the occasion? Let us find out about the Gods revered, what symbolism there is behind it all, and in what way the pilgrims celebrate this intent to bring fortune to their life.
1. Lord Vishnu - The Sustainer and Grantor of Prosperity
Lord Vishnu, the guardian of the universe in the Hindu trinity, is the main deity who is revered on Akshaya Tritiya. According to myth, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama, was born on this day. Lord Vishnu is revered, and the Vishnu Sahasranama is recited or heard by the devotees, asking for blessings and protection of the almighty.
Leaves of tulsi, sandalwood paste, yellow flowers, and sweets like kheer or sheera are used in Vishnu puja. Satyanarayana Katha or puja is also done by the devotees individually or in groups at temples or at home to receive his blessings.
2. Goddess Lakshmi – The Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity
Akshaya Tritiya would never be a complete festival if the consort of Lord Vishnu (and goddess of prosperity and wealth), Goddess Lakshmi, (the money giver) is not appeased. As the day has been associated with akshaya labh (eternal gains), worship of Lakshmi is considered to be highly rewarding for those who are seeking economic stability and prosperity.
Devotees purify their homes and shrines, illuminate oil lamps, and offer coins, lotus flowers, and sweets to the goddess. Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali or the 108 names of Lakshmi is recited and Lakshmi Kubera Puja is performed in some households to attain long-term money.
3. Lord Kubera – The Treasurer of the Gods
Another major god worshipped on Akshaya Tritiya is Lord Kubera, the divine accountant and guardian of money. A prayer to him on this day is believed to placate Goddess Lakshmi as Kubera is her assigned treasure handler of money in heaven.
Offering jaggery, rice grains, coconut, and betel leaves are done while reciting Kubera mantras. Businessmen and traders especially prefer worshipping him with the aspiration of gaining successful business and sustaining wealth.
4. Lord Parashurama – The Warrior Sage
As mentioned above, Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated on Akshaya Tritiya as the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. A dharma-bhakt and audacious Parashurama is a warrior saint who purged the world of oppressive rulers.
Temples of Parashurama also have certain rituals, and his life and deeds are read out for inspiring righteousness and courage. Kerala and other places where Parashurama created the world have certain cultural and religious importance on this day.
5. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati – The Divine Duo of Wisdom and Beginnings
Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati are also worshiped by the individuals who start business, marriage, or studies on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. Ganesha is called upon to guard against hurdles, and Saraswati is worshiped for the boon of intellect and ideas.
Students, authors, and musicians start fresh work today after leaving books, writing tools, and music instruments in front of the altar and chanting Saraswati Vandana. Children usually start their Vidyarambham (initiation of studies) today in certain southern states.
Akshaya Tritiya abounds in mythological stories which lend divine reverence to it:
Visit of Sudama to Krishna: Lord Krishna's impoverished Brahmin friend Sudama visited him on this day with a humble gift of pounded rice. Sudama's life was turned around by the kind act and blessings of Lord Krishna, demonstrating that an act of small devotion can gain unlimited dividends.
Draupadi’s Akshaya Patra: During the Pandavas’ exile, Lord Krishna blessed Draupadi with an Akshaya Patra, a vessel that never ran out of food. This event is believed to have occurred on Akshaya Tritiya, reflecting the day's energy of never-ending sustenance.
Beginning of Treta Yuga: Scriptures also mention that Akshaya Tritiya marks the beginning of the Treta Yuga, the second of the four yugas in Hindu cosmology. It is at this time that Lord Rama was born and Ramayana major events occurred.
The spiritual potential of Akshaya Tritiya can be realized to the fullest by undertaking major rituals:
1. Puja and Fasting
Devotees wake up early, have a ritual bath, and fast. Long-term home or temple pujas are conducted where ingredients are offered to gods. Lakshmi-Narayana puja is offered with gold or silver coins by saving on expenditure.
2. Buying Gold
Purchasing gold or silver is an ancient tradition on this day. The gold purchased during Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring good fortune and be a marker of long-term prosperity. People also purchase houses, start enterprises, or make significant economic decisions on this day.
3. Charity and Annadanam
Philanthropy (daan) during Akshaya Tritiya is said to earn boundless merit (punya). Relief of hunger, poverty, and dressing with food, clothes, and money to the poor, Brahmins, and cows are suggested. Annadanam (feast for groups) are organized by some temples.
4. Tarpan and Pitra Puja
This day is also best to perform tarpan (rituals for dead ancestors). Families offer water along with black sesame seeds, barley, and flowers to beg blessings from their ancestors.
Odisha, Lord Jagannath's Chandan Yatra begins today.
Rajasthan, the farmers begin their new crop today, and married couple are burdened with gifts and ornaments.
Maharashtra, griha pravesh (house warming ceremony) and marriages can be done in a good mood.
Special Lakshmi pujas and Vishnu pujas are held in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and puja on Parashurama Jayanti as well as temple fairs are held in parts of it.
