The Best Books For Children By Age | Read To Succeed

Being a teacher, I’ve always had questions from parents on how to choose the correct book for their child.

I’ve always guided them and succeeded many times. It was possible only by understanding the interest of my students. Reading doesn’t always mean stories. Some of my students just don’t like to listen to stories in class, so we cannot expect them to read story books.

To understand which books we need to buy for our kids, we must observe their interests. Getting something that fascinates them, and glues them to reading is very important. Once we know where the interest of our child lies, we can buy them more books as per their age. Every age has different learning requirements.

1.Board Books (0-3years old)

These are the kind of books that have more pictures and can be read to the kids by parents. The major learning from these books is building basic language skills in the young ones and making them understand shapes and colours.

Some examples of Board Books are:

  1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board book] Eric Carle
  2. Where Is Baby's Belly Button?
  3. Baby Touch: Peekaboo [Board book] Ladybird
  4. My First Little Librarian: Box set of 10 Best Board Books for Kids

2. Picture Books (4-6 years old)

These books too will have lots of illustrations to make the kids read and imagine. Young phonics readers who know the basic sounds, with or without the help of the parent, can try reading such books. Children at this age inculcate values and thus need to read moral books too.

Some examples of moral value picture books are:

  1. Phonic Reader (Illustrated) (Set of 6 Books) - Story Book for Kids - Bedtime Stories
  2. My First 3 Letter Words: Tracing And Activity Book
  3. My First Words Naming words Action Words Describing Words Opposite Words Box Set of 4 Board Books
  4. 101 Sight Words And Sentence With 400+ Sentences To Read Activity Book For Children

3. Early reader books (6-8 years old)

Now here comes the time when parents need to make the decision to choose books according to the child’s age. Some kids would love to read fantasies, others would read non-fiction.

These books will involve the kids and their emotions while reading. Little girls would like to read fairy tales, some would like to know about superheroes, while others would like to explore space.

Some examples of early reader books are:

  1. Moral Stories for Children -Set of 10 Illustrated Story Books (Packed in a Gift Box)
  2. Zayn and Zoey Solar System Kids Story Book for Early Learning - Children's Educational Picture Book, English Language
  3. 101 sops Fables For Children 5 Minutes Read Aloud Illustrated Tales With Morals
  4. Knowledge Encyclopedia For Children Our Planet Earth Collection of 6 Books Box Set
  5. My first Illustrated Fairytales Set of 6 Books

4.Chapter books (9-12 years old)

These books are for children who can read by themselves and love some challenges in reading. They enjoy reading fiction books, especially those with series of it. Children at this age, however, can be distracted by lots of different activities. But if they develop the habit and love for reading, then trust me, as a parent, you will have nothing to worry about.

Some examples of chapter books are:

  1. The Kid Who Came From Space
  2. Pegasus Books Ruskin Bond, Children Story Books Collection (Set Of 4 Books)
  3. The 1,000-Year-Old Boy
  4. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

5. Novel reader (13-18 years old)

These are for the teenaged years where parents play a very important role. We need to guide them to the right sort of reading. Let’s make reading a habit for them. Let them find peace and calmness in reading. Thus gift your teens books, encourage them to read and let them find peace in it. The benefits of extensive reading are many, it can build a good personality overall.

Some novels which I would recommend are:

  1. The Canterville Ghost
  2. You Only Live Once
  3. Illustrated Classics Around The World In 80 Days Abridged Novels With Review Questions
  4. Without Merit: A Novel

Give your child the exposure to reading. Exposing children to diversity in books will prepare them for life in diverse world. Hope this helps. Happy Reading.
