Words that describe a noun are called adjectives. All describing words are called adjectives.
Introduce the concept of adjectives as words that describe nouns. Use real-life objects, picture books, and classroom items to demonstrate how adjectives answer questions like:
What kind? – furry, loud, tasty
How many? – five, several, few
Which one? – this, that, those
Whose? – my, her, their
Not all of these just yet, but students can investigate a range of adjectives through examples:
Quality: green, cold, tall
Quantitative/ Number: many, two, enough, three, hundred
Demonstrative: this, that, these
Possessive: his, our, my
Positive: fast
Comparative: faster
Superlative: fastest
There are three degrees of comparison of adjectives. They are:
1. Positive Degree
2. Comparative Degree and
3. Superlative Degree.
Look at the following sentences.
1. Adrika’s song is sweet.
2. Sneha’s song is sweeter than Adrika's
3. Shyla’s song is the sweetest among all the girls.
In sentence 1, sweet is the adjective in its simple form. Hence, it is said to be in the Positive Degree.
In sentence 2, sweeter is the adjective denoting a higher degree of the quality than the positive. Hence, it is said to be in the Comparative Degree.
In Sentence 3, sweetest is the adjective denoting the highest degree of quality. Therefore, it is known as the Superlative Degree.
Most of the adjectives form the Comparative by adding ‘er’ and the Superlative by adding the ‘est’, the Positive.

When the positive ends in ‘e’ only ‘r’ is added to the comparative and ‘st’ to the Superlative:

When the positive ends in a single consonant preceded by a short vowel, this consonant is doubled before adding ‘er’ to the Comparative and ‘est’ to the Superlative.

When positive ends in y, preceded by a consonant, the y is changed into ‘i before ‘er’ to the Comparative and est to the Superlative:
