Farewell Speech for Colleague

Farewell Speech for Colleague

As I am contemplating a farewell speech for a colleague, my mind is going through a rollercoaster ride thinking about all the hard bittersweet goodbyes, laughter shared, countless teamwork we do and so much more. Farewell speeches are filled with a lot of emotions, reminiscing thoughts and memories and sadness that you will be losing a dear friend/coworker.

Farewell speeches or writeups are personalised depending upon the equation you share with that person but generally, they all are quite respectful, professional and brief expressing your gratitude for all the amazing times spent together and wishing all the very best for their next journey.

Some tips to create a Farewell speech leaving a long-lasting impact are:
1. Prepare an Outline:

Planning is extremely important for a structured speech. Wrote down bullet points of what you would like to mention in the write-up. Think about all the good times and contributions to the company by that colleague which you will include.

2. Introduction:

What is the reason for the speech must be established at the beginning leaving no ambiguity at all. Usually, introductions are very short crisp and to the point. Some great ways to begin are by greeting the audience or saying a famous dialogue of that colleague or you can mention this is a goodbye or farewell speech.

3. Expanding Thoughts:

After the introduction now dive deeper into your experiences, funny moments, and cherished memories in a light-hearted, respectful manner. You can add a dash of humour as well. In this section, you can also include the contributions of other team members and the stories of all of you together. Please keep in mind to always be positive as you would like to bid farewell on a good note and never on a bad note.

4. Check and Recheck:

Proofreading a speech is essential to make sure all the words, sentences, structure and flow of the speech are on point. This helps you to also redo or undo any parts of the speech. If you went overboard or you feel like adding anything else, all this can be done while editing and proofreading.

5. Tonality:

Farewell speeches are in a relaxed, respectful, honest and loving tone. Try to be your authentic self and don’t copy blindly. Speak it out loudly and leave no place for any mishaps.

6. Confident Body Language:

Always be confident, stand up straight and smile. In case you feel nervous you can make eye contact with that colleague as that will calm you. Having a confident body language gives you courage and a sense of accomplishment.
