As I am contemplating a farewell speech for a colleague, my mind is going through a rollercoaster ride thinking about all the hard bittersweet goodbyes, laughter shared, countless teamwork we do and so much more. Farewell speeches are filled with a lot of emotions, reminiscing thoughts and memories and sadness that you will be losing a dear friend/coworker.
Farewell speeches or writeups are personalised depending upon the equation you share with that person but generally, they all are quite respectful, professional and brief expressing your gratitude for all the amazing times spent together and wishing all the very best for their next journey.
Planning is extremely important for a structured speech. Wrote down bullet points of what you would like to mention in the write-up. Think about all the good times and contributions to the company by that colleague which you will include.
What is the reason for the speech must be established at the beginning leaving no ambiguity at all. Usually, introductions are very short crisp and to the point. Some great ways to begin are by greeting the audience or saying a famous dialogue of that colleague or you can mention this is a goodbye or farewell speech.
After the introduction now dive deeper into your experiences, funny moments, and cherished memories in a light-hearted, respectful manner. You can add a dash of humour as well. In this section, you can also include the contributions of other team members and the stories of all of you together. Please keep in mind to always be positive as you would like to bid farewell on a good note and never on a bad note.
Proofreading a speech is essential to make sure all the words, sentences, structure and flow of the speech are on point. This helps you to also redo or undo any parts of the speech. If you went overboard or you feel like adding anything else, all this can be done while editing and proofreading.
Farewell speeches are in a relaxed, respectful, honest and loving tone. Try to be your authentic self and don’t copy blindly. Speak it out loudly and leave no place for any mishaps.
Always be confident, stand up straight and smile. In case you feel nervous you can make eye contact with that colleague as that will calm you. Having a confident body language gives you courage and a sense of accomplishment.

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining me today as I say goodbye to a very dear colleague who is a very dear friend now. Your presence at work has been extremely valuable and the thought of you leaving and that you will not be around as soon as I enter the office is hard to fill. As I contemplate the times we spent together and the impact you have left on me I am filled with gratitude and respect for you my friend!
You have been an inspiration for me by walking your talk at all times, wearing your heart on your sleeve yet being certain you had to. Your hardworking nature, dedication towards your work, attention to detail, working on time and going the extra mile for certain tasks have been a great motivation to me to up my game. You have set a benchmark for professionalism with your unique idiosyncratic ways and means. Honestly, striving to uphold what you have set in your absence is quite a challenge for me.
Beyond the colleague, you are a dear friend to me who was, is and will always have my back. Though we may not meet every day I’m sure we will make time to be in touch. With your warmth kindness and endearing nature, I’m falling short of words to express what you are to me. From silly doubts to working for deadlines to amazing lunch breaks we have gone through it all.
It's hard to say bye and the thought of seeing your desk empty is not sinking yet. But knowing that this isn’t the end of our journey together gives me some comfort.
As you step into this new journey I wish you the best of everything, may you prosper in everything you do. May your journey be full of success, happiness and joy. Thank you for everything that you are and what you do.
Cheers to you, my friend! You will be missed!
