Homeschooling is educating children at home instead of sending them to traditional or private schools.
If you’re new to homeschooling and thinking if you can make it work with your ongoing job, note some of these tips to manage both roles hassle-free.
Some parents homeschool in the evenings or on weekends, and some start early in the morning or organize their schedule around various activities. For instance- you can do 3 hours of work together and then set a reading and independent task for the child rest of the day. Homeschool timetables need not exactly match the typical school timetable, where you’re staying with the kid the whole day.
Choosing the perfect curriculum that works right for you is crucial. If you work 8 hours a day, you most likely don’t have time for a curriculum that needs you to be available for long hours and guide them step by step manually. Search for an open-and-go option that only needs you to teach a brief lesson before allocating kids to work independently.
Being a home-schooler doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to teach each subject yourself. Outsourcing subjects is totally fine and is necessary for parents who work full time. Outsourcing is surprisingly a clever move as it utilizes time, reduces workload and kids are still gaining productivity at the end of the day.
Ask your kid to teach you what they know. It’s a wonderful chance to understand better how they learn. If you have more than 1 kid, let them peer-teach, this way they are going to enjoy and learn simultaneously. Older kids can explore and research any topic of their choice and then demonstrate it to you at the end of the week.
Selecting a corner of your house where learning happens each day can improve focus. You and your kids can decorate the corner however way it’s desirable so it feels special. Putting a desk- lamp, pretty day planners, and a jar of nice pens can make kids feel like they have an important job to do.
