Impact of the Reducing Green Cover of Earth

Impact of the Reducing Green Cover of Earth

Want to make your kids aware of the importance of celebrating Earth Day and encourage them to contribute to the Earth’s ecosystem? With this blog, let them know about the serious importance of preserving Earth's green cover.

Why Earth Day became significant

Earth is believed to be the only planet in our solar system that has life. The Earth has all essential minerals, air, and temperature to support life forms. It is surrounded by a layer of atmosphere. It has a green cover because of the trees, but this green cover is gradually dying. Many government bodies around the earth launch many campaigns on Earth Day. This bold step by them is to protect the dying cover of Earth.

World Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. The idea of celebrating Earth Day was first proposed in 1969 by activist John McConnell. It was formally declared in 1970 that April 22 would be celebrated as World Earth Day. Several countries came together to take an oath to save the planet. Today, a lot of entities and individuals come together and commemorate Earth Day. Students and teachers pledge to take care of the environment in schools. Children are given Earth Day activities as assignments to help young minds develop a mindset to protect the planet. This happens in apartment complexes, corporates too, and yet, we barely have scratched the surface here.

Why is the Green Cover of Earth Dying?

Green cover refers to the green area of the Earth covered by trees. It signifies how much forestation is available on the Earth. With each passing day, this green cover of Earth is reducing. The ever-rising population is an important factor for this increase. The need for vehicles, timber, and housing has grown as a result.

Industrialisation and urbanisation too are major factors. Most big business owners prefer leverage their power and influence to use forest lands and other such natural resources to scale up. More industries mean more job opportunities, leading to a further reduction in green cover.

What is the Impact of the Reducing Green Cover of Earth?

The cutting down of trees has a huge negative impact on the environment. Since the trees are cut down, there is not enough source to absorb the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, resulting in rising temperatures and other associated climate issues.  Let’s look at the impact of the reducing green cover.

Loss of Natural Habitat

Deforestation comes at the cost of animals and other living beings losing their homes. Without the presence of green cover, these species will eventually face extinction.   For example- Bengal tigers are under threat of extinction due to deforestation.

Climate Change

Plants and trees are very important for maintaining the climate of Earth. Photosynthesis by plants

leads to absorption of carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Aggressive deforestation leads to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and hence, increases global warming. Rising sea levels, extreme flooding and drought, and natural calamities are consequences associated with global warming.

Loss of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is extremely important for the sustenance of animals, microorganisms, and plants. Green cover is important for maintaining biodiversity as it provides food, shelter, and other essential resources. Reducing green cover can cause biodiversity to suffer and loss of genetic resources.

Water cycle disruption

One of the most important ways to save the earth is to protect the water cycle. Trees and green cover form an important part of the water cycle. If the trees are not there, the water cycle will be disrupted. This will bring changes in the pattern of rainfall thereby leading to either drought or excessive rainfall.  Trees are critical in regulating the water cycle and thwarting water scarcity by absorbing rainwater and helping infiltration.

Soil Erosion

Trees are an important part of protecting the soil. Roots of trees hold the soil and prevent the risk of erosion. When the trees are cleared, there is an increase in the risk of soil erosion. Soil erosion can further lead to various problems such as reduction in fertility of soil, and higher water pollution.

Air Pollution

Reducing green cover can harm the air thereby leading to air pollution. The reducing green cover leads to an increase in pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide. There will be no natural filter for getting rid of these pollutants. As a result, it will lead to poor air quality and increasing health risks for humans and wildlife. One of the major ways to save our planet is to reduce the levels of pollutants in the air.

Damage to Cultural Heritage

The loss of green cover not only affects humans and wildlife, but cultural heritage too. Forests are extremely important for the indigenous people. The loss of green cover means that the identity of these people is lost too. As a result, the cultural heritage passed on to us over the generations will be lost too. One prominent example of damage to cultural heritage as a result of the green cover loss in India is the impact on indigenous communities and their traditional way of life in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Ways to Save the Earth

When celebrating Earth Day, it is important to understand the ways to save our planet. This can help in integrating the technology and implementing the best solutions.

Some of the prominent 10 ways to save the Earth are as follows:

1. Humans should use less land for cultivation. The large areas of forest are used for cultivation. Humans should now be mindful about how they should be using the land. Whether it's for growing crops or building homes, humans should not try to encroach on the forests.

2. Non-renewable sources like fossil fuels are being used at a rapid scale. This can prevent the future generation from enjoying the benefits. Humans should depend more on renewable sources of energy. Thus, it is advisable to focus on using wind energy, solar energy, and hydropower.

3. Agriculture should now involve crop rotation techniques. This technique uses less energy and can easily contribute to saving extra land from being used.

4. We should focus on planting more trees as a pledge on Earth Day. Start small by starting this at home- if each of us increase green cover in our homes, we fight climate change better!

5. Paper is prepared from wood. Therefore, it is important to avoid wasting paper. fewer the trees that are cut to prepare paper, the more positive the impact is on the environment.

6. Try to conserve water. Although the earth is covered with 70% water, not being mindful about its usage can lead to severe drought.

7. It is advisable to save electricity as well. Turn off the electricity when it is not in use. Unplug the charger and switch off the TV/ any such household appliance.

8. We should learn to avoid food wastage. Try to put less food on your plate or even avoid wasting too much leftovers.

9. One of the best ways to save the Earth can be helping the community by picking up the trash. If there is trash around, it is negatively affecting the atmosphere. It is advisable to pick up the trash and throw it in a trash can. This helps to build sustainability and clean the earth.

10. We should try composting for a better environment. Composting is said to be one of the best ways to save Earth. Through composting, kids can learn how to turn trash into reusable soil for growing plants. This can help to keep too much trash out of landfills and protect the water treatment facilities.

Earth Day and Environment Day are celebrated every year. However, we should also start taking responsibility for it. It is important to note that there is not one particular date on which we should be taking care of the environment. It is advisable to take action and preserve the environment. You can teach your kids with a global warming essay about the impacts of reducing the green cover. They are our future and making them aware at the right time about this severe issue ensures they will take crucial measures to save the planet.
