Hurray! We won the match.

Ouch! That really hurt badly.

Wow! That is a beautiful dress indeed.

Sounds like ‘Hurray,’ ‘Wow,’ and ‘Ouch’ may appear weird to the ear, isn’t it. But in English these sounds have a lot of importance. We refer to them as Interjections. There are hundreds of the sounds like these which makes it easy for us to express our emotions and feelings.

What are Interjections?

Interjections are one of the eight different parts of speech in English grammar. They are short, passionate words used to express strong emotion or sudden feelings, like joy, grief, suffering, regret, etc. We use interjections to quickly communicate our emotions.

Examples of Interjections:

Wow!

Yay!

Oops!

Uh-oh!

Hooray!

Hush!

Ouch!

Shh!

Types of Interjections
1. Interjection of Greeting

These interjections are used when one greets the others. Example - Hi, What's up, Hello, Hey etc

2. Interjection of Surprise

This kind is used when a surprise event occurs and people are surprised. Example - Ah, Oh, Wow etc

3. Interjection of Joy

These are expression of instant pleasure, joy and happy occasion. Example - Good, Excellent, Hurray, Wow, Congratulations etc.

4. Interjection of Sorrow

These expressions are used when a sad event has happened or even when a terrible news is given. Example - Well, Hmm, Shoot, Whoops, Yay, Oh No, Oh well, Ouch, Alas, Help, Oops etc.

5. Interjection of Approval

These are utilised to express the sensations and emotions that people encounter and comprehend during their lives. Example - Bravo, Yippee, etc

6. Interjection of Attention

These are used to communicate commands, requests and wishes. Example - psst, Look, Shh, Hush, Yoohoo, etc.

Tips to Use Interjection:

If you want to use interjection in your writing, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, don’t overuse them. A few interjections here and there can add colour and liveliness to your writing, but too many will make it sound choppy. Second, make sure the interjection you choose makes sense in the context of the sentence. A random, out-of-place interjection will just confuse your reader. And finally, don’t be afraid to get creative.
