Of all the animals especially camels they give different sounds to show their attitudes, their calls, and their alarms to other animals or human beings nearby. This blog post will explore the types of camel sounds and what they mean, making it fun and easy for kids to understand the way camels talk!
Like most animals, camels can also speak using some strange noises. Camels live in groups and so they make some vocalizations to help one another know that they are happy, fearful or angry. Just like how people speak different languages, animals have their ways of “talking,” and the sounds of camels are part of how they “speak” to each other and their environment.
Here are some of the main types of camel sounds you might hear, along with examples of when and why camels make these sounds. The next time that you come across a camel it is important to listen closely because you may hear one of these special sounds!
What It Sounds Like: Short and far sounding like “grrr” or “hrrr”.
When Do They Grunt? Camels also make grunting sounds in their normal or comfortable state. It is possible for a camel to occasionally grunt when it is lying down or even when it is chewing.
Fun Fact for Kids: If you could imagine, a camel’s sound like that is more of a ‘hi’ to other camels if they are nearby. Just as we may sigh over how well satisfied we are with having eaten or over some other happy circumstance.
What It Sounds Like: Long and sustained low-pitched “moooan” vocalisations frequently with a whining undertone.
When Do They Moan?: Camels moan to show that they are unhappy or uncomfortable. For instance, if a camel is called to carry a load it does not like, it will moan to express its discomfort.
Fun Fact for Kids: As I mentioned before, it is like when we groan to indicate that we are not happy that we are doing something. The, aah, aah, that a camel makes is actually an expression, “Oh, this is tough work you know”.
What It Sounds Like: These are sounds that are loud, booming, echoing, and can go a long distance.
When Do They Bellow?: Males especially emit loud low sounds or bellows during the period of mating. They do that to call females of the camel kind and signal other males to stay clear of their domain.
Fun Fact for Kids: A male camel’s bellowing is its way of claiming to the world – “I am the biggest and the strongest!” One would compare it to how certain animals look for an opportunity to try and show off.
What It Sounds Like: An immense, clear ‘growl,’ that is halfway between the noise a lion makes but much quieter.
When Do They Roar?: Camels roar when they want to intimidate other camels or have probably been threatened by other animals. A roar is a signal to other animals to keep off or else they will meet their doom.
Fun Fact for Kids: A camel’s roar is a kind of initial warning which is like the proverbial ‘ Prior warning.’ I’m in charge here!” It is a barrier to have people avoid you, or to remain out of your space at least.
What It Sounds Like: Suddenly loud and brief noises, typically high-pitched, that could be snap, snort, snap-snick.
When Do They Snort?: Camels ugh when alert or reacting to something they have noticed. If a camel views something strange, it will hump to signify that it does acknowledge the fact.
Fun Fact for Kids: So, snorting is a way that a camel questions like ‘What’s that’ or you can say ‘Hold on what is this?’ It is a sign that they are knowing that something new is out there for them.
What It Sounds Like: Painful shrill “bleating” noise such as that produced by a goat or sheep.
When Do They Bleat?: Baby camels are referred to as calves and like all young ones require attention from their mothers, they bleat. This sound assists them in communicating with their family.
Fun Fact for Kids: The bleating is some form of communication that is said, “Mom, where are you?” from a baby camel. They are cute gentle sounds that enable the mom to locate the babies.
